ADG Retail — complete Dnipropetrovsk and available

Action Data Group is proud to announce that the first wave of our project “ADG Retail Ukraine” has been successfully completed. Last week we finalized the retail outlets and HoReCa census in Dnipropetrovsk. This first stage also served as a pilot project, to identify and resolve possible methodological obstacles.

The has shown that there are 5,197 retail outlets, and 936 HoReCa’s in the city of Dnipropetrovsk.

The formats we have used to register the data are:
For methodological definition, retail outlet formats have been defined as follows (applicable to ex-USSR territory).

Pavilion 
Definition Selling a broad array of goods, usually of very low quality, frequently expired, and very often counterfeit. On the “civilization scale” holds the third rank from the bottom of the list, being above flea markets and bazaars.
Average purchase Very low.
Size Usually plastic of fabric hung over a metal frame. Total area — about 3-4 square meters.
Assortment Reduced.
Prices The lowest possible.
Additional services None.


Kiosk 
Definition Catering for low-income customers in a hurry. Quality of goods is equal to, or slightly lower than in general stores.
Average purchase Low.
Size Usually a “box” with hints of modern design (“Euro-box”), rectangular or cylindrical. There are still a considerable number of Soviet-style kiosks. Aprrox. area: 4-5 sq. m.
Assortment The usual specialization is tobacco, newspapers & magazines, some electrical goods, pirated CDs and videos, soft drinks, dry snacks. There are a small number of branded kiosks.
Prices Average and low.
Additional services None.


Discounter 
Definition Reduced assortment with extra-low prices. The main difference between a local discounter and a bazaar is a somewhat increased level of comfort in the former.
Average purchase Low.
Size Relatively small. Trading area doesn’t exceed 1,000 sq. m. The most popular sizes — between 300 and 700 sq. m.
Assortment Up to 1,500 items.
Prices Low, comparable to small wholesale bazaars.
Additional services Usually none.


Supermarket 
Definition Catering for he customers’ mundane needs, including delicatessen. Fairly large assortment with not too many choices within each category or product line. The goods supply is based on most common need assessment of regular customers.
Average purchase High.
Size Trading area is between 700 and 5,000 sq. m. Popular size: 2,500 — 3,000 sq. m.
Assortment Thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of items (on average — between 7,000 and 25,000, sometimes up to 30,000).
Prices Average, higher than in discounters.
Additional services Available, including parking.


Cash & Carry 
Definition The same as supermarket, with the only difference that Ukrainian C&C have two price tags: per piece, and per pack (bulk). The second price is lower, and closer to wholesale prices.
Average purchase High and very high.
Size 5,000 to 10,000 sq. m.
Assortment Usually between 10, 000 and 35,000 items.
Prices Comparable to supermarkets (per piece) and small wholesale depots / bazaars (in bulk).
Additional services Available, including parking.


Small-scale wholesale stores 
Definition Usually, this type of outlet is located in former wholesale depots or warehouses (logistical centers). Sales are done in small bulk (“melkiy opt”) at low prices.
Average purchase Medium and high.
Size Starting from 1,000 sq. m.
Assortment Reasonably extensive array of basic goods.
Prices Sometimes lower than in Cash & Carry.
Additional services Usually none.


Mini-market 
Definition Stores that are situated in the backyards of residential buildings (apartment blocks), or nearby them, or on their ground floors. Recently, however, mini-markets are being set up in central city spots as well. Defining criteria for mini-markets are size of trading area and assortment, but not the geographical location.
Average purchase Low.
Size Not higher than 20-30 sq.m., but sometimes up to 150 sq.m.
Assortment Target groups are customers who need a quick purchase of basic goods (bread, tobacco, milk, etc).
Prices Sometimes higher than in other store types.
Additional services None.


Specialized store 
Definition The widest selections of goods in specific categories.
Average purchase Varies.
Size Can vary from small to medium, e.g., from 150 to 700 sq.m.
Assortment Limited.
Prices Higher than in supermarkets.
Additional services Sometimes available.


The database contains the following fields:
  • the name of retail outlets;
  • administrative district of the city (rayon);
  • the exact address;
  • whether or not 24/7 schedule is applied.
